Yes, I have been cold-clocked, which is why I used the metaphor in the title, for God’s sake.

As all of you know, a recurring theme with me is deception, which becomes a rather onerous problem when you’re dealing with a stealth grifter.

What I see is often a mirage…and I’m being polite. Why I’m being polite is beyond me, given the circumstances of the crime.

Inside all the bravado and layers of persona lies a heart that resembles those oil soaked pelicans on the Louisiana coastline.

But you probably already knew that, given the emotional landscape around here of late.

That’s where satire comes in handy. It’s a defense mechanism, of course, like a button on a stopwatch.

So with a wink and a nod to the arbiters of eternity, those celestial entities responsible for confusing me, I expose everything I can get my hands on before they wipe me off the face of the planet.

I see our relationship as a kind of détente. The truth is I see most of life this way:

A détente.

But sometimes there’s no actual agreement at all. In fact, whatever’s on the table is so obscure I can’t find it. It’s like this by design. Their design.

Psychiatrists refer to the tactic as “crazy-making.”

And this is where I falter, because I want so badly to believe in people that I’m willing to occasionally close my eyes as they stare down my throat.

I never seem to learn. I should purchase a pair of blinders and a Seeing Eye dog I know I can trust just to see what it feels like.

Obviously, I’m on thin ice at the moment, but nothing is more real than love in the face of adversity. And in this spirit, thank God for family and close friends.

Bless you all. I couldn’t make it without you, and the love is endless…or at least as far as my eyes can see.
